Can Increasing Dose Of Levothyroxine By 25 Mcg Cause Weight Gain In A Thyroid Patient?

I am taking Levothyroxine 75 MCG which was uppped from 50 MCG in the last month due to a recent blood work. I am 62 years old with good health other than this Thyroid issue. My weight gain has increased over 10 lbs in the last 3-4 weeks. I am concerned of this weight gain and wonder if I should by-pass my family doctor to see a specialist that would do more in depth tests to adjust my medication to my specific issue.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Weight gain can be related to low levels of thyroid hormone as you probably know.

The increase in the dose of the levothyroxine may increase your levels of thyroid hormone to the normal range and possibly cause weight loss.
This can take 2 to 3 weeks for the full effects of the hormone to start.

You may want to consider waiting to see if there is any improvement. If none occurs then you may want to see an endocrinologist for assessment.

I hope this helps
