Can Hiatus Hernia Be The Reason Of Frequent Hiccups?

I am 81, female, and have had mild GERD for years taking Losec when needed. 18mths ago I had a gastroscopy which revealed a small hiatus hernia. For sometime I have noticed occasional limited bouts of hicups especially when drinking coffee and occasionaly this occurs when eating bread. Yesterday I was eating a sandwich when this occurred and I could not swallow for a minute or two and had pain in my lower gullet. Water quickly remedied this and I was back to normal with no further eating problems thoughout the day. Could this be associated with the hernia? Thank you fo your help.

Greetings of the day

Coffee and carbonated beverages cause relaxation of lower oesophageal sphincter which could produce hicups. Also the impaction of food bolus can also occur in normal individuals.
Rest be assured its unlikely to be due to your hiatus hernia.
