Can Hemochromatosis Homozygous Be Diagnosed Over Mri Scan And Ultrasound?
Is it reasonable for 60 yo someone just diagnosed with hemochromatosis Homozygous C282Y with ferritin over 1000 an 92% iron saturation, and who is asymptomatic with normal liver functions, to choose to have MRI scan and ultra-sound instead of liver biopsy?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Liver microscopy is a patient with hemachromatosis is required to assess the extent of deposition of iron in liver. Liver biopsy is a procedure wherein a thin piece of liver parenchyma is removed and examined with different routine and special stains. Liver biopsy cannot be replaced by MRI or ultrasound.
