Can Heating Pad Or Ice Help To Reduce Leg Swelling?

My mother in law has severe leg swelling in her left leg and moderate swelling in the right leg. After visiting the doctor he increased her Lasix and sent her for a doppler to check for clots. She is 90 years old with a heart condition. There were no clots. My question is how can we make her more comfortabe or help the swelling go down. Will a heating pad or ice help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
I understand your concern.
Heating pad/ ice compresses help to relieve inflammatory / traumatic swelling. You mother in law is given Lasix.. indicating that swelling might be from cardiac/ kidney/ liver problem.
She neds proper consultation by a physician & few invwstigations to pin point the cause followed by cause specific treatment.
For time being, continue with lasix, it will relieve her in a couple of days. It should be accompanied by coconut water/ potassium preparation like Kesol.
thanks.
