Can Flu Medication Containing Alcohol Cause Jittery Feeling?

I have had the flu for over a week. I was taking a severe cold/flu liquid medicine (30ml) before bed and it really helped me to sleep well, which is especially needed since my whole family is sick and as mom I am the one taking care of everyone. But when that bottle was done, the local pharmacy didn t have any more so I bought a different kind and it actually kept me up all night long, I felt jittery and was never calm. The difference is that the first medicine had no alcohol and doxylamine as it s antihistamine. The next product contained alcohol and used the same thing that is in Benadryl.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the severe flu you are going through.

The second medication which had alcohol, might have caused the jittery feeling you experienced. I advise to switch to another cold medication that has no alcohol. Usually, they are prescribed for children.

Next, increase fluids intake like water, juice or soups as they will keep well hydrated and not lythergic.
Try to have light meals and breast chicken soups to gain energy and "fight" flu.
Multivitamins supplements containing vit.C can help also.

All the best! Wish fast recovery!
