Can Fever After Surgery Indicate Infection?

My son had surgery on Saturday for a broken femur. They put in 2 rods and 2 nails. He has not pooped since then and is now running a fever of 101.3 that has not gone down in the last hour with Tylenol is there any way to determine if it is due to constipation or due to possible infection

Hi,

I got that your son developed acute infection. Fever is the sign of acute infective pathology which may be due improper caring of the wound or due to infection of the open wounds in the body. Antibiotics are advised for the post surgical patients. Follow the short course of antibiotics with appropriate hydration helps to overcome the condition.

If you found any discharge from the wound site or surgical site, consult the doctor before taking any antibiotics. Pus culture may be done to identify the source of infection. Sterile wound dressing should be maintained to prevent infections. High fibre diet helps to correct constipation. Protein rich diet, calcium supplement, appropriate activity, plenty of water helps your son to recover soon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
