Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband who is 54 has started drinking energy drinks and I keep telling him not to as I'm afraid they are bad for you. His NHS bowel cancer results came back saying he has a hint of blood in the stool and to do another test. Could the energy drinks be causing this?
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
No, i am not aware of this side effect of energy drinks. If this happened just once then there is no need to b e worried. However if this is noticed repeatedly then it may suggest some anorectal issues such as hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary. Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health.
