Hi, I am 46 and obese. I have symptoms I believe are indicadive of diabetes. I wake up tired and usually with a headache and sometimes shakey until I have eaten something. I do drink more than I used to (which wasn t a lot anyway), I have also developed genital itching. My question is, if it is diabetis how far does it have to develop before it can only be treated with medication? I would like to try and combat it with diet and exercise only and I have read that it can go into remission with a good regime. Thankyou in advance. Su
Dear Sir /Madam. Your question is actually very important and interesting as well... Your symptoms are indicative of diabetes. My opinion `1) Get a glucose tolerance test done (If not FBS, PPBS, HbA1c) to establish the diagnosis 2) Based on the readings first control sugars 3)side by side start daily exercise and diet moderation 4) once your sugars are down we can try to control diabetes only with diet and exercise.
Now coming to the question of remission it depends on the number of functioning islet cells in your body. Although theoretically true we don't see remission that much in type 2 diabetes. But with good diet, exercise and weight loss you can manage diabetes for few years without taking tablets & that would be a great success story. Wishing you the very best!
