Can Bleeding During Bowel Movement Be Related To Suffering From Hemorrhoid?

I have a hemorrhoid. I have had it since I had my second child 17 years ago. Never had any problems with it. Last week I had a hard bowl movement it felt like it tore a little so there was just a little blood when I wiped. This has happened before so I never thought anything about it. After wards there was a lot of pain in that area I couldn't sit and felt nauseas to my stomach. I noticed my hemorrhoid had returned. I took some stool softeners. I went again yesterday and after when I wiped there was a lot of red blood. I started using preparation H. Today I had another bowl movement and again a lot of blood but no pain this time. I noticed the hemorrhoid has shrank since yesterday. Now I am having pain in my middle back on my right side. Is this all related?

Hello
Hemorrhoids can commonly bleed, especially if you have been constipated. The effort caused by a bowel movement can aggravate the hemmorrhoid and cause pain, discomfort and bleeding. The hemorrhoids can also become thrombosed, where a clot develops and this can be quite painful. Creams such as preparation H are commonly used to help swelling go down.

Hemorrohids do not cause back pain. Common causes of back pain are a pulled muscle, arthritis, a slipped disc, a kidney infection, or even a vertebral fracture. Did you do any heavy lifting or exercises that might have caused the back pain? Do you have any urinary symptoms? You should be evaluated for the back pain if it lasts more than 2 to 3 days.
