Can Being On Gluten And Dairy-free Diet Result In Drowsiness?

I am 45, female, 5 8 , and 120 lbs., in apparently good health. I eat a mostly raw diet, am gluten and dairy-free, and exercise daily. I would like to know why I sometimes (not all that frequently, but it s gone on all my life, perhaps one-4 times a month) feel so sleepy I can t keep my eyes open, and have to have a nap. When I wake up from one of these spells, I invariably have a bowel movement (usually normal, with no pain, or irregular texture, color, consistency, or volume), following which, all drowsiness fully disappears. Is there anything to be concerned about?

Hello and thank you for your question. There are several things that can cause excessive daytime sleepiness. One is sleep apnea which can occur even in thin ad otherwise healthy people. Also, though it sounds like your diet is healthy, eating to many carbohydrates can cause a lot of sedation. It could also be anemia or low thyroid hormone. Please see your doctor for an exam and some blood testing to sort this out.
