Can A Tampon Be Missed On Vaginal Examination?

I was unsure whether or not I took out a tampon yesterday as I had no recollection of removing it so I went the the ER today to have my vagina checked out. The doctor felt around and said he didn t see anything and couldn t feel anything and sent me on my way. I m feeling paranoid as this has never happened before and am curious, is it possible for a doctor to miss a lost tampon? Admittedly, I was drinking last night but still think I should have some memory of taking the tampon out.

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. After a thorough clinical examination including a speculum examination and palpation of the vagina up into the fornices, it is rare to miss a tampon if it was in situ. Perhaps you had a vague memory due to the inebriated state, as you mentioned. If the tampon remained inside for long, you would develop symptoms of infection, foul smell etc. in most cases. Please watch out. Do not worry, however, because, you have been examined already. Take care.
