Can Warfarin And Dimethyl Sulfoxide Supplement Be Taken Together?

Would this chemical interfere with warfarin? DMSO is chemical. It is available as a prescription medicine and dietary supplement. It can be taken by mouth, applied to the skin (used topically), or injected into the veins (used intravenously or by IV). DMSO is most commonly used for bladder inflammation (interstitial cystitis). How does it work? DMSO helps medicines get through the skin and can affect proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and water in the body.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The safety of Dimethyl Sulfoxide in combination with the blood thinner such as Warfarin drug has not been established. Hence, it should be used under close monitoring by certain lab tests such as prothrombin time and INR.

Dimethyl Sulfoxide is predominantly used as a topical analgesic, a vehicle for topical application of pharmaceuticals, as an anti-inflammatory, and an antioxidant.

It has been found to be useful in the treatment of various clinical conditions, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its use only for the symptomatic relief of patients with interstitial cystitis.

It seems to act as a local analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
