Can Vitamin B12 Deficiency Cause High Red Blood Cells And Cholesterol?

Hello, i am a 62 yearold female. I had series of blood work revealing a Vitamin B12 deficiency, and subcutaneous B12 shots seem to be dramatically fixing the progressive numbness in feet, then legs, then arms, and hands as well as cognitive, and attention/memory dementia-like problems i was having. Only 4 weeks into B12 shots regimen. I also have out of range results with my red blood cells, cholesterol, lipids, etc.... And the pattern suggests high risk of cardiovascular disease. Is it possible that someof these out of range results are partly attributed to the Vit B12 deficiency,? Thanks

Hi welcome to HCM.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency is associated with gross changes in the blood picture. The abnormalities are reflected in the form of large red blood cells -macrocytes.Low levels of this vitamin can directly contribute to cardiovascular morbidity due to elevated levels of homocysteine. This metabolite can contribute to elevated blood lipid levels along with risk of thromboses in the circulation leading to heart attacks.Prompt correction of this vitamin deficiency is needed by parenteral supplementation.Consult you hematologist for further query.
Thank you.
