Hi,

Based on the result of given lab tests your daughter seems to be suffering from hypothyroidism with iron deficiency anemia. Had I been her treating doctor I would have prescribed the same medicines.

1. These medicines should never be taken together. To ensure adequate absorption from the intestines it is best to take Thyronorm on an empty stomach along with a full glass of water at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before eating breakfast or three or four hours after the breakfast. Since Fefol will interfere with the absorption of Thyronorm, it should also be taken on an empty stomach at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after taking Thyronorm.

2. Generally these medicines are safe and well tolerated however the following side effects may occur:

a. Thyronorm: Hair loss may occur during the first few months of treatment. This effect is usually temporary as your body adjusts to this medication. If this effect persists or worsens you should inform her doctor.Other side effects include increased sweating, sensitivity to heat, nervousness, mood swings, tiredness, diarrhea, tremors, and headache.

b. Fefol: abdominal pain, constipation, and dark coloured or black stools. Folic acid supplemented with iron may increase the metabolic usage of iron. Folic acid with iron helps restore healthy iron levels.

3. Let her continue taking the medication and her thyroid function tests should be repeated after 4-6 weeks to check the efficacy of Thyronorm and to see that the TSH level is maintained in an optimum range of 0.4 - 4 mIu/mL.

Hope these answer your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing your daughter a very good health.
