Can Radioiodine I -131 Therapy Be Done After A CT Scan With Contrast?

I had a total thyroidectomy Dec 19,2016. I was scheduled for an I-131 test on Feb 22. Due to a trip to the emergency room in which I was given a CT scan w/contrast I am unable to have the I-131. I am told I have to wait another 6 weeks to have it. I have heard/read about Thyrogen injections that are given in some cases to patients who are going to have the I-131 test. Could I request this and possibly shorten my 6 week wait? I feel so exhausted and weak already I don't know how I'll get through another 6 weeks. Plus, I'm worried about my TSH level getting too high.

Hi,

It is better to postpone radioiodine therapy after contrast CT.

Iodine in iodinated contrast agents (ICAs) interferes with radioactive iodine treatment (RAIT) and diagnostic scans in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) because it can compete with ¹³¹I.

Few studies have shown that it is better to postpone 3-4 months after radioiodine therapy after contrast CT.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
