Can Prednisone For Mononucleosis Cause Pancreatitis?

Hi, My 17 year old has mono and strep. He was prescribed 10 mg of prednisone but was given a shot first on Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning we started the 10 mg. He started having abdominal/back spasms Tuesday night and last night was worse but he didn t tell us until this afternoon. We stopped the evening dosage. We are told by the doctor to take him to the ER. But I m hesitant because I know they will do a lot of tests and he might be exposed to other germs and make his mono worse. From what I ve read, the prednisone is causing this symptom which can be pancreatitis. I ve read that in the ER they would simply give pain killer and put the patient on the IV. We ve been keeping him hydrated so I don t think he s dehydrated. Can you give us advice?
