Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 81 years old have been taking the purple pill for a hiatal hernia for years (10+) . I just had an upper GI and was told I have a lot of scar tissue! I learned about another product by name of PANTOPRAZOLE . What is your opinion regarding the two ? Also do you believe the scarring is because the purple pill has been trying to heal the esophagus/stomach lining over the years as a result of my alchohol consumption etc..... I have stopped alchohol since the exam and hope I can keep away from it for the duration. One thing that is remarkable: I have not had any heartburn, acid reflux etc.....If I can stay away from the booze what in your opinion is the better of these two inhibitors?
Both Nexium and Pantoprazole have similar mechanism of action. However, Nexium has shown to improve symptoms in 4 weeks as compared to Pantoprazole which requires about 8 weeks to give similar results. Also, Pantoprazole has increased risk of osteoporosis (bone thinning) as compared to Nexium. If Nexium is working well for you, I would recommend Nexium is a better choice than Pantoprazole.
Scarring seen in your esophagus is due to the healing process from damage to esophageal epithelium by gastric acid and alcohol injury. Please be advised to abstain from alcohol.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
