Hi, I mother is 83yrs and CKD patient and she is having low HB 8.4. Currently she is taking Folic Acid 5mg and every alternative day and Softeron Capsule (Elemental Iron 54mg, Docusate Sodium 50mg, Folic Acid 7.5mg). Can she take Orofer XT instead Softeron Capsule and take Docusate Sodium 50 mg?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Anaemia is common in CKD patients. Shrike iron is many times necessary to such patients but not always be sufficient to correct anaemia.

As both of Orofer and Softeron contains iron and folic acid so he may use any one of it.

But as said earlier in CKD, sometime iron may not correct the haemoglobin.

They may need an injection called erythropoietin. So check his iron (ferritin) if it's normal but still anaemia is there then he may need erythropoietin infections.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
