Can IBS Cause Severe Diarrhea?

I have had diarrhea for several weeks. I m thinking it may be Irritable Bowel Syndrome? I had bleeding ulcers and became severely anemic in June and landed in ICU for 3 days and received 2 pints of blood but I had a second endoscopy in July and was told that the ulcers were healing and I have had no other stomach issues. Do you have any comments, ideas? Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
I understand your concern
Your diarrhea could be a gastroenteritis (bacterial , protozoa infection) or IBS, Celiac disease, Microscopic colitis.
I advice to to consult the Gastroenterologist for better evaluation and undergo following investigation:
Stool microscopy and culture
Blood tests: Full blood examination, LFT, ESR, and
serological testing for coeliac disease
Abdominal ultrasound, endoscopy to rule out the ulcer and colonoscopy.
Hydrogen breath testing to rule out malabsorption.

Doctor will give following advises:
Take solubel fiber like ispagula husk. if not responds then laxative like sorbitol and lactulose will help
Avoid spicy diet , take small frequent meal rather than large meal.
Anti diarrheal: loperamide
Tablet metronidazole
Sporolac sachet in half glass of water.
Drink ORS solution and boiled rice with added lemon and salt to mainatin the hydration.
Take diet like banana, applesauce, yogurt, buttermilk and toast.
Avoid stress and do regualr exercise like walking and yoga.
Hope this may help you
