Blood In Urine, Flank Pain, Pain While Urinating. What Might This Be?

Hello! My son has been urinating a gross amount of blood for over 4 months at this time. He is also complaining of flank pain and pain while urinating in the pelvis . The emergency center does not know what its coming from as his kidney functions were normal and there was no sign of a UTI . Do you have any idea of what it may be?

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Hematuria or blood in the urine can be caused by: trauma, stones, tumors, prostatic inflammation/infections, malformation of blood vessels, a condition called paroxysmal notornal hemoglobinuria-hemoglobin of broken red blood cells is passed into the urine, blood disorders, immune conditions

Investigations would include: urine analysis and microscopy looking for abnormal particles or cells,
blood test looking at the kidney, full blood count, calcium,
autoimmune screen,
imaging tests such as an ultrasound or CT scan of the pelvis

I hope this helps and your son improves soon

hello and thanks for the query.
I notice that you have mentioned that your son has this problem for about 4 months now. Hence, this issue is not to be taken lightly and you need to take an appointment and see the doctor for evaluation of hematuria rather than the emergency room where they cant think beyond emergencies! You also haven't mentioned the age of yoru son as there are different causes among different age groups.
I will mention some of the commoner causes, but remember to kindly get him evaluated early to start treatment of the cause.
Kidney stone, infection of the urinary tract ,blockage of the tract by a stone or tumor, a narrowing of the opening , Kidney diseases,blood-clotting disorders, injury to the upper or lower urinary tract, some medications; certain analgesics such as aspirin, anticoagulants (blood thinners),prostate diseases, hypertension, sickle cell anemia, infections ,or inflammation of the kidney, strenuous exercise, especially running, and sometimes even cycling.
The causes are many and varied and your doctor will advise correctly after a proper evaluation.
Hope your son gets well soon. Take care.
