Are Topical Creams Effective For Ulcerative Colitis?

I have ulcerative colitis. I also have middle pack pain witch my doctor prescribed me a topical pain cream DIC/LIDO 4/5% Pentox3%LIPO. But the Side effect warnings say it can cause gastrointestinal issues witch would flair my ulcerative colitis. Was just wondering if I should use the topical cream or not?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not advisable to use it for ulcerative colitis. This cream contains diclofenac (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), lidocaine (local anesthetic) and pentoxifyline (blood thinner) which is prescribed for topical pain relief and improvement of blood flow. It is not effective for ulcerative colitis. It may cause dyspepsia, stomach ulcer and bleeding hence to be avoided while suffering from ulcerative colitis.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
