Are Rapid Heartbeats And Low Blood Pressure Post Intake Of Cipro Serious Concerns?

I took one tablet of Cipro yesterday, as I ve had diarrhea for a number of days without good explanation, and I had a graduation to attend... so I was worried!. Just now, about 7:30 pm, I am having a rapid resting heart beat (100) and low blood pressure 115/61. Apparently this can be side effect with Cipro. Should I worry having just taken one tablet?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Ciprofloxacin can alter heart beat because it prolongs QT interval in ECG but in your case it is most likely due to fluid losses from your body in the form of diarrhea. Low BP due to fluid losses causes a compensatory increase in heart beat. I recommend taking adequate fluid intake per day (take ORS) until your diarrhea settles. You can continue taking Ciprofloxacin for 6-7 days while keeping an eye on your BP and heart beat. If you feel dizzy, or palpitations occur then discontinue the drug for the time being until cause of it is established. Any further concerns then feel free to ask. Get well soon.
