Are Long Menstrual Cycles Normal In The Beginning Of Menstruation?
My daughter just this past summer started her period. Her cycle for the last two months were 7- 10 days. For the month of October . Her period started on 10/2/14.. and it's still on. steady flow. She has to use two pads instead of one. Is this normal to start this way.
It is usual though not normal for adolescents to have long menstrual cycles. This sometimes happens due to unbalanced female sex hormonal levels in blood. It can also happen if the ovaries have functional problems. As menstruation is a totally hormonal phenomenon, unless the hormones are balanced, the periods remain irregular with flow of blood too much or not at all.
In this case, it is important to see a gynecologist for physical examination. He/she may ask her to go for blood tests to determine the levels of hormones in blood. She might have to go for ultrasonography (USG) too to determine the function of ovary and rule out any structural anomaly.
If hormones will be unbalanced, she might have to go for hormonal medicines to regulate their levels for some time until the regularity is achieved regarding menstruation. She might also have to take medicines that enhance blood clot formation like tranexamic acid. The condition is very common among women and is curable with medicines in most of the cases.
