Are Elevated Blood Sugar Levels Harmful?

My mother normally had a blood sugar reading 120. She in the ICU unit and her sugar is reading between 299 and 338. I believe this is extremely dangerous and am pleading with the Sr's and nurses to treat this urgently. Can you confirm this is extremely dangerous?

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
Yes elevated blood sugar levels of 299 & 338 mg/dl in your mother could be dangerous. These high blood sugar levels happens due to severe deficiency of insulin in body & due to high action of anti-insulin hormones which increase the breakdown of glucagon in body leading to high glucose level in blood.
These high blood levels may cause complications such as Diabetic ketoacidosis & Hyperosmolar coma. Diabetic ketoacidosis is common in type 1 diabetes whereas hyperosmolar coma is common in type 2 diabetes. Both these conditions are extremely dangerous & life threatning. They should be treated in emergency or critical care unit of hospital.

Refer to your doctor.
Hope this information helps
