Are Metronidazole And Cefixime Sufficient To Reduce Infection On The Surgical Wound?
Hi, I have a brother who was bitten in the upper right arm requiring approx 12 stitches to replace a skin flap (happened in Portugal on vacation) treated at a hospital and received an 8 day course of what sounds like augmentin -Amoxicillin 875 mg + Acido Clavulanico 125mg every 12 hours for 8 days . Wound was inspected today and shows signs of infection (8th day of antibiotic) so he was put on Metroidazole 250 mg TID x 10 days, and Cefixime 400 mg QD x 5 days. Is this adequate antibiotic coverage? This was prescribed by a doctor in Jordan where he lives. He has a history of being exposed to MRSA (+MRSA nasal swab approx 5 yrs ago for which he was treated). Thank you...
Cefixime plus metronidazole appears to reduce the risk of surgical site infection. So, the treatment is correct. I would also recommend an antibiotic cream for local application to reduce the infection.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
