Are MS And Ischemic Demyelination The Same?

I have been diagnosed with MS about 10 yrs ago but that diagnoses was constantly being challenged by I Other doctors. Now I have been diagnosed with Ischemic Demylenation but truly am still having some same symptoms. So r these closely related or what is the relationship between the two?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Both Multiple Sclerosis and Ischemic demyielination are diseases related to the damage of the nerve sheath. The cause for this damage is different, in that, in MS the nerve sheath (myelin) is damaged by inflammation cause by immune cells turning against it (auto immune disease), whereas in Ischemic demyelination the cause is oxygen deprivation of the cells of the nerve sheath due to blood vessel disease.

Although the cause is the same in both disease, the results are the same and the symptoms are very similar. Treatment depends on the cause of ischemia. Wishing you all the best.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ornela Ademovi
