Ankle Injury, Popped Loudly, Swelling, Bump Formation. Will I Feel Better?

I just stepped out of my vehicle a while ago and when I did somehow managed to twist my ankle..when I did of course I went over unto my foot. It popped extremely loud and I managed to get inside. I kind of tried walking it off because I thought it was no big deal. Now foot is swelling hurting to the extent of me crying, to bend my foot kills me, and I have a large goose egg knot on the side of my foot right where it is hurting.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms indicate injury to the ligaments/tendons in the ankle joint.
Kindly get an X ray of the area done. It will help in detecting the damage & take subsequent management steps.
Till then:
1. Apply ice over the area
2. Analgesics like Diclofenac with serratiopeptidase to reduce swelling & pain
3. Topical application of Analgesics & muscle relaxant gel
4. Complete rest to the part

Wish you a good health
Take care

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Propably, you might have developed a soft tissue hematoma (blood clot) in the ankle area.

An xray of the injured area is necessary to rule out a fracture. If xrays are negative for a fracture, an MRI scan is essential to know the soft tissue (ligamentous) damage.

The general treatment guidelines of ankle injury are as follows -

• Protection – protect the injured area from further injury by using a support or wearing shoes that enclose and support your feet such as lace-ups.
• Rest – stop the activity that caused the injury, and rest the injured joint or muscle. Avoid activity for the first 48 to 72 hours after injuring yourself.
• Ice – for the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury, apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day.
• Compression – compress or bandage the injured area to limit any swelling and movement that could damage it further. You can use a crepe bandage or a simple elastic bandage . It should be wrapped snugly around the affected area but not so tightly that it restricts blood flow.
• Elevation – keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to help reduce swelling.
• Medications - Simple analgesics like Advil or Aleve help to reduce pain and inflammation.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
