About To Receive An Epidural Injection, Have Degenerative Disc Disease. Side Effects ?

I'm about to receive an epidural injection but my question is that 30 years ago I had an epidural injection for the birth of my child and that's when all my back pain started. Now my question is, is this injection going to affect me? I have degenerating disk disease and now I had an mri done and I guess I have inflammation, arthiritis and pinched nerves.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

This is just to let you know that epidural injections are administered to provide pain relief. But there are certain inherent complications that may arise out of spinal epidural injections (though the incidence is very very less). A few of them are dural puncture, bloating, nausea and vomiting, vasovagal reaction, nerve root injury, epidural hematoma, transient paresthesias, hypotension, epidural abscess, paralysis etc.

Hope this information is helpful.Good day

Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Kerry Pottinger's  Response
Hi,
Epidural injections do not damage the back or cause chronic back pain. They are used in the treatment of back pain and inflammation. Back pain is very common and although your back pain started after the birth of your child for which you had an epidural, the epidural did not damage your back.
The epidural which you are going to have for your current back problem is likely to give you significant benefit in the long-term.
