85 Year Old With Shingles. Constant Pain. Advice?

My father, 85, was diagnosed with shingles 4 weeks ago. He has had almost constant pain ranging from 2 (with meds) to 10 without meds (using scale 1-10). However, 5 days ago, he started having severe sharp shooting pains that makes us all start scrambling for anything that will help and usually goes away in about 2-5 minutes. THese happen randomly. Just saw a neuro-opthamologist, he said his eyelid was turned in and wants to do surgery on him to fix it. Said this could be causing these pains--We just don't see the connection--Is this true?

Hello,
The incidence of post hepetic neuralgia ( PHN ),a most common type of neuropathic pain, increases as the age advances. The severeity of PHN increases not only as the age increases but also depends upon the duration of time.
Thete most common types of treatment offered for PHN are,
Tricyclics anti depressant like amytriptalin
Anti seizures like PREGABLIN
Opiods like TRAMADOL etc.
Normally a combination of medicines is given.
You must consult a neurologist for the exact diagnosis and treatment.
Thanks
