3 Year Old Child, Bleeding In Ears. Normal CAT Scan Results. Started Antibiotics And Ear Drops, No Relief. Remedy?
Hello my 3 yr old daughter was seen in the ER last night her left ear has been bleeding off and on for two days, she is not complaining of pain and has no fever. They ran a cat scan and found no traumatic injury. They really gave no answers and said it could be a ear infection started her on antibiotics and a ear drop. The bleeding has continued.
Bleeding from ear may be due to trauma to external ear canal, tympanic membrane, or due to rupture of tympanic membrane in middle ear infection.
Some time a chronic foreign body in the ear also present with bleeding.
The bleeding should be controlled if it is continuous.
Ear examination by an ENT surgeon under sedation is important to locate the site and cause of bleeding so that specific measures can be taken to manage the ear bleeding.
Hence I advise you to consult an ENT specialist for further management.
In doing a CT scan, your doctors have ruled out the possibility of a foreign body stuck deep inside the ear canal and this was necessary.
Another common reason for ear bleed in children is repeated scratching. Please observe your child carefully for any tendency to scratch the ear and cause small injuries which can be the cause of bleeding. Very often, a scab might have formed over the scratch wound which will itch and subsequently when the scab is disturbed, it may lead to bleeding.
Ear infections are also very common in children and your doctors are doing right by giving a course of antibiotics as well.
