21 Days Old Baby, Suffering From Mild Cough, Sneezing, Rashes On Face. Taking Febrex Plus, No Improvement. Suggestions?

Hello Doctor, My baby is 21 days old. He is having mild cough and sneezes at apprroximately half an hour gap. My doctor has suggested Febrex Plus oral drops. I am giving these drops since one week, but the cough has not reduced yet. I feel due to this medicine, my baby has developed small rashes (reddish achne) on his face close to eyes. Pls suggest some alternate medicine which is soft and effective.

Hi, it appears that your child has allergic rhinitis, and chest infection, So i advise you to consult a pediatritian for diagnosis and treatment.

thank you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nsah Bernard's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

I believe that if the cough has persisted beyond 1 week it would be wise to consider giving antibiotics such as amoxicillin as it is possible that your baby might already be suffering from post-viral cough which could be bronchitis or pneumonia already. Normally febrex (combo of paracetamol, chlopheniramine, and phenylephidrine) should not lead to any rashes as side effects (but do occur in rare situations) since they are also medications that prevent histamine related rashes. But if you suspect rashes are due to febrex plus, then I suggest you stop giving the medication. What she will require presently is nasal spray + antibiotics + acetaminophen which can help clear off the infection and treat symptoms.

Hope this helps and wish you the best
