2 Yr Old. Dark Red Vomit With Chunks. Did Not Anything Red. What Caused Redness In Vomit?

My 2 yr old daughter puked dark red vomit 4 times and with chuncks in it. She did not eat anything red and she puked alot of red up what looked like blood . We took her into the ER and the dr said he never seen anything like that from a 2yr old but had with older adults with ulcers , liver problems etc. He said if it happens again bring her to childrens hospital. Just curious what it could be since he had never seen anything like that before. Thanks

Hi,

First things first. Small children do bring up blood, only not as commonly as adults. Since it was dark red, it is likely that the blood is coming from lower down the gut like the small intestine. Usually blood from the food pipe (esophagus) is bright red, but dark red is from lower down. THe most common cause is still an inflammation of the small intestine but it could also be from what is called a 'meckel's diverticulum' . This is usually associated with pain in tummy as well.

Your child needs a meckel's scan and also would benefit from a upper gastroendoscopy.
