Question: query for Dr. XXXXXXX Tayal
A follow up ...
After the birth of her baby and the bleeding and told the uterus did not tighten.

about a week ago (her baby was about 6 weeks old) she had cramps and bleeding. Doctors told her that her placenta had not been completely removed. That evening in hospital a clot the size of a grapefruit came out of her . Doctors said it was probably the placenta but there was still more inside of her. They gave her a vaginal pill.

She is going back for an ultrasound next week. The pathology said it was part of placenta but some is still inside her.

Is this dangerous? Why would this happen?

Isn't it common practice to make sure placenta out especially when someone is bleeding to the point of needing several transfusions.

The doctors stopped the bleeding with a balloon the night of her giving birth but seems like they didn't look for a cause just said uterus didn't tighten.

Worried.

Thank you

Melanie

Brief Answer:
Can be due to placenta accreta.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The excessive bleeding like your daughter had after a delivery is either due to a relaxed uterus- inability of the uterus to tighten or due to some pieces of placenta that are left inside it.
The left over pieces sometimes need D&C for cleaning the inner walls of uterus. This can happen if the placenta is very tightly adherent to the walls of the uterus- called as placenta accreta.
Now the ultrasound scan will help in detecting if any more pieces of placenta are left or not.
Any uterine infection also needs to be ruled out due to the retained pieces. Now that she is getting proper medical care there is nothing to worry. Just relax and wait for the ultrasound scan.
I hope this answers your query.
