Why Are My Fasting Blood Sugar Levels More Than Postprandial Glucose Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Jul 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

I am 26 years old & 6ft'2 inches tall and 115 kgs in weight.

Have undergone a routine examination for blood sugar and found that my FBS is 102 mg/dl & PPS is 77 mg/dl.

I am confused on how PPS is lower than FBS. In any case, I would like to know your opinion on whether I would be considered as pre diabetic, what are the steps i need to take with immediate effect etc.

Look forward to hearing from you

Brief Answer:
Your sugar levels are normal please change your lifestyle

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, Greetings from HCM. I understand your concern. You need not worry as your blood glucose levels are normal now. Due to the exaggerated secretion of insulin your postprandial glucose might be low. This is postprandial hypoglycemia. It wont cause much of problems. But still you are closer to that magic figure 126 you need to practice healthy lifestyle to be away from that magic figure.
First you need to get your lipid profile, thyroid profile, microalbuminuria and HbA1c checked. Also keep record of your fasting and postprandial glucose record every day for a month in your diary with a well calibrated glucometer. Your medications are sufficient for time being if you are committed for lifestyle changes.
First stay away from all the fast / processed and fried food stuff.
Divide your meal in to 4-5 parts per day whenever you feel hungry. With 2/3 snacks in between. That helps to keep the sugar levels constant throughout the day. Add more of fiber rich food stuffs like green leafy vegetables, raw fruits (not juices), take very less of carbohydrates (rice) avoid sugar completely. Take Millets in boiled form or the breads prepared out of it like ragi, bajra, sorghum, wheat etc., are very good source of micronutrients required for the action of insulin. Take more of protein rich food, like egg white, fish is good source of omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Moreover, beetroot juice (inorganic nitrate), olive leaves, garlic, turmeric, tamarind also have proven benefits. Say no to oils and cholesterol rich food stuffs. Based on this, with the help of a dietician, you prepare your diet chart and strictly follow it.
Physical activity is very important, play games, walk at least half an hour to one hour a day. This not only helps you to burn calories, but also to relive your stress. Music is another way to relax too. Try and practice yoga, meditation and pranayama. Some aasanas are very easy to practice and also beneficial. Quit smoking (if) and reduce your alcohol intake.
If u can follow these (have to!!) you can definitely see difference yourself by the time you have your next blood investigation report in three months time
Wish you good health. Do feel free to ask more queries. THANK YOU

Thank you Doctor,

Have attached a photo of the test result ( including lipid profile).

Just to clarify, i currently do not use any medicines or anything. Have put on a lot of weight in the recent few years. Went for a general check up and have got the attached results.

Can you please clarify if currently i need to visit a local doctor here for any prescriptions? or changing my lifestyle as suggested by you would suffice?

Also can you please elaborate on whether i need to monitor my sugar levels on a daily basis or shuld i check after three months
