When Should The First Dose Of Hep B Vaccination Be Given?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: Hello Doc,
My son is 7 week old. Just now we got the 6 week vaccination done.
Hospital did not give the hep B vaccination at the time of birth, they said that it will start from 6 week. Is it fine?
Checked about it online, everyone says first dose should have been given at the time of birth. Is it mandatory to start hep B vaccination from birth only or starting from 6th week is fine. If not, what we can do now?

Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Can be given later.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Yes, It is fine to give Hep B vaccine from 6 weeks.

The recommended schedules followed in XXXXXXX are: (i) Birth, 6 and 14 weeks, (ii) 6, 10 and 14 weeks (Combined DTPwc/Hepatitis B vaccine can be preferred).

As your son is 7 weeks old, you can get him vaccinated with the first dose now, second dose by 10 weeks and the third dose by 14 weeks.

Hope this answers your query. If any further clarifications, will be happy to help you.

Regards.

Hello doctor,
We have done with the Hep B vaccination along with other 6th week vaccination.

Is there optional vaccination available at 6th week? Can we get those after few days?
Is painless vaccination better than the normal one?
Need your suggestion.

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Let me know the vaccinations given till now.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the follow up.

Let me know the vaccines which have been administered to your son till now. Considering your pediatrician would have advised you all the vaccines, if anything required will let you know.

You can also go through this link : http://www.iapindia.org/IMM%20Schedule.pdf. for optional vaccination. This will help you with the schedule for vaccination followed in XXXXXXX

DTP vaccine - Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis. A different version in the pertussis component of the vaccine is known as Painless vaccine and the routine vaccine is the whole cell variation.

We usually do not recommend painless vaccine for primary vaccination and routine whole cell vaccine is better as far as efficacy is concerned.

Hope this answers your query. If any further clarifications, will be happy to help you.

Regards.
