Brief Answer:
Its an Antibiotic.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well Ancef contains a drug called Cefazolin which is an Antibiotic. This medicine directly doesn't help in reducing swelling of foot but if there is an infection in the foot , this antibiotic heals the infection and in turn reduces the swelling.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.

The doctor at the hospital has already ruled out an infection. no blood clot , not from neurapothy , no bone fractures, no sprain, to me it seems like entrapped nerves. I don't understand why they would want to give her an anitbiotic drip if she doesn't have an infection. She has been in the hospital since late thurs. Her foot is still swollen and she says the pain is starting to run up her leg, she still cant put any weight on that foot (cant stand up) Its seems to me they should have come up with a diagnosis by now . They say it could be arthritis ! COULD !!!! isn't there a blood test or wouldnt an xray determine if it was arthritis and if so how would Ancef drip help? if that was for an infection she does NOT have . Im getting worried! I dont understand whats going on. Does this seem right to you ? what should I do ? she wants to come home but the doc says two more days of this ancef iv drip ! what is your opnion ! please advise !! THANK YOU

Brief Answer:
No use of Antibiotic if there is no infection.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Well if her doctors are pretty sure that it is not infection then there is no point in giving Antibiotic.

Well yes there are tests ( which is mentioned below ) that helps in the diagnosis of Arthritis. These tests has to be considered if they suspect Arthritis. However just confirm with them that what you are suspecting either Arthritis or Infection and have not ruled out the possibility of infection.

Tests that has to be done for her :

X ray Ankle Joint AP and lateral, Complete Hemogram, Serum Uric Acid, CRP, Anti-CCP Antibodies, ANA. Serum Creatinine, Serum Albumin.

Kindly get these tests done and revert back .
