Brief Answer:
A Discontinued Headache Medicine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there! Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic!

Fioricet was a combo medication that contained Acetaminophen, Butabital and Caffeine. The idea behind the drug was to give a combo therapy to deal quickly and effectively with Tension Headaches.

Acetaminophen is a basic pain killer. It's the same stuff in plain old Tylenol.

Butabital is the reason this drug was discontinued though. It's a barbiturate. A sedative. The idea behind putting that in there is that Butabital actually relaxes the muscles in the neck and head that can cause tension headaches. The problem is if you overdose on the stuff. You stop breathing and go into a coma. Also, long term use can lead to liver damage. Also taking the stuff with alcohol is a disaster waiting to happen.

Lastly, they put caffeine in there to help increase and regularize blood flow to the brain and counteract the drowsiness caused by the Butabital.

So that's Fioricet. Hope this information helps you.

Brief Answer:
The codeine ones are still around.

Detailed Answer:
I think, those are still being made. I'm not sure. They're prescription drugs and it depends on which pharmacies you go to.

You gotta remember Codiene is a great pain killer, but it is a narcotic. Its similar to the Butabital that i mentioned in the last answer. A little safer overall, but still. The potential for something to go wrong is pretty serious.

Why are you taking the meds? Whats wrong? Maybe we can work in the cause and figure out a better way to treat it.

well, actually i got an umbilical hernia about 2 weeks ago, and a few days ago, i ran out of the prescribed pain meds (i was in the e-room for a while and they discovered its not pinching intyestines so i have an appointment for outpatient surgery in sept.
I texted my father because he usually has an arsenal of pain killllers locked up, and i rarely take them for anything ever... in fact im kind of paranoid about anything addictive because i have a younger brother that got addicted to pain killerd years ago... now hes on step 12... again... (not putting dowen the 12 steps just... im not really an addictive personality)
well, he sent a bunch of the fioricet to me with my husband.... and i tried one... and it really didn't help the pain THAT much... it did make it tolerable, however i think the caffeine in it kind of balanced out whatever calming effect it would have had... and instead of resting i was all over the place... cleaning, laundry... things i shouldn't be doing till i have this hernia operation....
I texted my dad and asked him if he could... maybe swap these out for something without caffeine,... but he said he doesn't have anything that's not for emergencies... or that he needs... (hes not a pill person either... hes in remission from cancer... has had several various operations on hands... etc... and has a collection of medications he never took) he felt badly but he said when my brother was in town a few months ago he flushed all his extra pills, because my brother is known to get to them, no matter where they are...
so that's how i got fioract..,. i was curious what it was since... id never heard of it... and i cant imagine its for anything like whahat ive got going on... i still have about 60 in the bottle but during this paragraphi locked them in my safe...
the part that stinks is... i did call the pharmacy where i got the initial ER take home prescription to see if they can refill it... tyhey said they cant unless i got back to the emergency room... all over again. i explained my surgery isn't till 3/4 of the way through September. theres nothing else they can do ( because i don't have a primary care dr... usually apparently theyd cover me) so instead of tramadol (which to be honest was kind of making me feel out of it anyhow). and fioricet, im relying on some good ole ibuprofen... (is that better than naproxen?) or should i take the naproxen in the mean time? thanks for your patience
well, i didn't take any more. I tried to give my dad back the rest of the bottle... he said he doesn't want it (youd think hed be a little more carful since his younger son is an addict)- so i put the rest of the bottle in my safe cause i don't want my kids getting to it... and i don't think its good for this situation... however if i ever get a bad headache... i know what to try....

Brief Answer:
Ibuprofen & Naproxen in concert sounds best

Detailed Answer:
Hey there, Thanks for getting back to me. And thank you for your patience. I'm sorry I couldn't reply earlier.

It looks to me that the Muscular and Skeletal pain from the surgery is your biggest problem right now. That sound about right?

I'd definitely stay away from the codeine (though it sounds like your already hip to that). The main reason is that codeine actually slows down your gut and puts more pressure against the abdominal wall. Worsening the strain on the operative site.

What you need is something that will reduce the inflammation around the operative site while keeping the gut moving normally. Ibuprofen and Naproxen are your best bets for that. As long as your staying within the dosage limits, I think those are great for this kind of pain.

You might want to try and combine Acetaminophen with the two. Alternating them over time. There is a synergistic phenomenon that's well documented between Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen (the pain killing effect of both is greater than the sum of the two separately).

I'm really sorry to hear about your brothers struggles with addiction. You should definitely gently discourage your Father from Enabling him and I'm sure you've done whatever you can to help your brother heal from the addiction.

Maybe you don't need to go to your ER for refills.. Are there any community or walk in clinics in your area? Urgent Care facilities.. they might be able to help you.. Pretty much no one is going to refill prescriptions nowadays without seeing the patient first.. The DEA thinks we're all (doctors) trying to flood the streets with narcotics for our nefarious purposes and is pretty hard on a doctor they THINK is prescribing outside of the normal. Not that I'm trying to justify it.. i'm just trying to tell you why the situation is so bad.

I certainly hope this helps. Yes Naproxen is a good drug and so is Ibuprofen. Alternate them if you can and use Tylenol (Acetaminophen) along with them to get the best results you can get.

I'm here if you need me.

no worries that it took a while to reply. its the net right? there's this thing behind the computer called life.... and we all have one (we would hope) - about my bnrothers addiction issue... his pain killer addiction started supposedly when he had an accident... and kept getting them prescribed... but im not sure how much I believe this... to be honest I think it has a lot to do with personality types/ im a lot like my father in that I really don't care about the side effect of a puill for pain... as lopng as it helps the pain... in fact id rather just have no other side effect... my brother on the otgher hand, and other addict types ive heard talk about it... talk about the high from the... whatever else is in it... at least initially.. after a long time I think it ends up being that they take it just to not get sick... which..... that's just... yeah... I don't.. its hard for me to not put blame on my brother for his own choices regarding this... I know he says addiction is a disease... but being from the same two parents, and not having the same tendencies as he does.... I also know he "liked to party... and still does" meaning he likes the atmosphere created where those things exist... I don't think he realizes you can create all kinds of environments with and without peers, regardless of the drugs present. I am a musician and I see all kinds of drugs all the time- it comes down... to a response I guess.... when a person hears " a famous personality has come out as being addicted to xyz" that person responds one of two ways... either "wow I better stay away from xyz" OR "wow I better try XYZ" im type 1... my brother is type 2...
I did end up having to go back to the ER but not for med refills... I started feeling really badly on Monday, and was having bathroom trouble, and had a slight fever that wouldn't go away and those things were on the list of things I should go back if I experience..... and while they did give mne a refill on the tramadol, im actually doping pretty ok on naproxen - and now ive read your post ill alternate it with ibuprofen.... I know they are similar in how they ... both anti inflammatory... dsoo ill start alternating it with ibuprofen thanks for that advice..,. for now, the tramadol is gonna be for at night.... cause.,.. dude I cant do a THING not one thing if I keep taking that stuff... I slept through 3 full days! sure no pain... but no life either :) im looking for a balance there.

Brief Answer:
You're on the right track

Detailed Answer:
Hey XXXXXXX thanks for getting back to me.

You'd be surprised how many people are getting addicted to prescription meds nowadays. It's really always been a problem, but we never really talked about it as a society. Your insights into your brother seem well reasoned and I do hope you find a way to help him.. or he finds a way to help himself. One thing I've learned is that people never get over an addiction until they chose to WANT to get over it.

If you'll indulge a short story. When I was a Resident in XXXXXXX we used to do about 6 months a year at the VA over on XXXXXXX Blvd. I've never seen more pain pill addicts in my life!. ALMOST ALL of them were manufactured addicts. MANUFACTURED BY US. A vet would come in with chronic pain from an old war wound and would get put on the 'good stuff' (Percocet, Vicodin.. They actually called it the good stuff). The Vets wounds would be old and complex and sometime be uncurable. But the main problem is there were too many coming in and not enough time to see them properly. So doctors would keep renewing the pain med prescriptions to keep the patients pain at bay until they could get around to really fixing the problem (if indeed it could be fixed). The Vet would be really happy and really addicted after about 3 months of this and when we cut them off.. (cause we all eventually do cut them off).. the vet would turn to the streets to find their fix...

It was a vicious thing to do and I wish I could just blame the doctors or the vets.. but it's human nature to seek out pleasurable experiences and over time your brain gets rewired in such a way that you really can't enjoy life unless your getting that specific High.

The only people that I saw come out of this cycle of Legal drugs, addiction, then illegal drugs were those who WANTED to come out. Who saw what it was doing to them. And trust me, there were very few. The people who did the best were ones who sought out help on their own.. not those who were forced. So talk to your brother if you can. Try and make it his idea to seek help. I think thats about all you can do in his case.

As far as you go. I'm sorry you had to go to the ER. Though I am glad you got a refill on your prescription. I would start figuring out if there is a local clinic you can go to to try and get regularized help rather than going to the ER. I used to work in an ER. The doctors are good, but their mandate is to 'TREAT & STREET'. That means figure out what the most basic treatment is to keep the patient alive and then get them out of there. I don't think you'll ever get to the bottom of your abdominal issues and GI issues in the ER. It's not the right environment. My 2 cents.

Be careful with the Tramadol, it can cause some constipation as well as the lethargy that you have already noticed. I think you're idea of taking it at night is a good one. You may even be able to get a better effect if you take the Tramadol with a dose of Tylenol (plain tylenol). And I am happy the Naproxen is working for you. Its a food drug. Make sure that you are hydrating well when you take all these drugs as your kidneys and liver are going to be working overtime to clear them out of your system.

Also, be careful of your bones.. chronic use of NSAIDS like Naproxen and Ibuprofen can cause Osteoporosis. You're already at an age where you have to be cognizant of the risk factors. Now, it's not like a single dose or even regular use over a few months can do anything to your bones. But years of use can do some startling damage. The ideal situation is if you can really get to the bottom of your pain issues and get it cured.

Let me know if there is anything I can help you with and I'll do my best.

thank you so much for your insight, and time spent to communicate with me on here! It is very lovely to know its a real person with real understanding on the other end.

My brother is currently attending AA.... you'd think that he'd ne in NA, however his habit of still smoking pot would be an issue. of course no one knows this but me - you are righty... it think even though he is off the hard pills ( now its just Adderall, calonapen, and ummm... I think welbutrin) hes traded one addiction for another in my opinion... he doesn't feel like he can function.... or that hes enough ..... without some pills.... as if he cant wake up and be ok on his own... if he takes some pill then he can rely on that... I don't really understand it.

I have noticed over the years that it seems there's a diagnosis du jour every 10 years or so... when I was a teen it was bi polar... everyone was bi p[olar... tI was even put on lithium for about 4 months... im not bi polar... I was just a teenager. right now its aspersers.... everyone has aspersers or some kind of autistic spectrum disorder... it just seems like the world is looking for more ways to make people not have to learn to be responsible for their own choices and the choice to grow...- by7 growth I mean we don't have to be a world o9f tragically misunderstood people... ui think we area world of tragically misunderstanding people... instead iof the defensive " well im different youhave to understand me.... ithink everyone if they tried to just understand eachother... all the time to the best they can... in order to further communication.... things would be simpoler. people are so busy being diagnosed they are not just seeing the simple things we can do about it...

don't get me wrong im not taking any credibility from actual emotional/social/mental/ what kind of thins is autism nowadays... disorders... it seems to me though that instead of a toom for helping people it is most often used as a took, for explaining why little timmy isn't doing what he should.... after this diagnosis... what reason is there for him to be doing what he should have been... grrrr I know some people are legit... im just tired of everyone blaming mental illness for everything.
\
its so disgusting the way you describe how out vets have been systematically addicted like a cattle farm.... I get what you described... the puills treated the symptoms... tyhen they were told to take a hike.,.,. they never worked thactual injury...

the reason I went to the ER for my hernia is because I am absolutely dirt broke poor. Yes I have a father who COULD** help me out with insurance but he's too busy making sure that *I will ever learn on my own* even though he has no money himself, hes living off his wifes... nevermind... no point in getting angry LOL its not personal... I get that... rolls eyes and remembers its not personal***

. My husband and I have been married 18 years but my husband used to work in real estate and after lehman brothers closed, he went back to his alternate career of music as well,. he uis actually making living money as a busker outside the baseball stadium ( they do know that he is there hes even been in their commercials) this however is not enough to provide past the day to day stuff, combined with the money I make in the studio gigs I do, and my album sales

don't get me wrong. I have 2 kids... one is very " typically normal" in that shes a cheerleader lots of friends,... flitrty etc.. she is 14...(but still a total nerd) my son on the other hand is going to be 17 next month and he is not at all interested in socializing outside of a fer computer games- its not that he wants to and is rejected... he is genuinely the kind of kid that says things like "when im a few years older ill relate to people better because at that time my communication skills and theirs will have matured" hes a fun kid with a great sense of humor. they are both very intelligent ( my son is now in 11th grade and just came back from the Stanford summer program where he decided to write a sonnet to me by text dedicated to time management and his inability to understand it.... while he was supposed to be studying for the final exam... ) ( to be honest I think that's the most important thing he learned this summer) - my point... as a mother... I have two kids that understand that theit choices are theirs to make.... well not really... lol they understand that guidance is crucial... but they are not going to let me run their lives.... however I cant imagine either of those kids on any kind of meds or drugs at all they wont even curse in front of me... the boy wont curse at all...

l.... its not that I don't believe there are not real issues and people do sometimes need meds... just as a society we move from blanket med diagnosis to blanket med diagnosis... it would seem. Ill admit I started Prozac about 8 months ago because I was having persistent anxiety and I didn't know how to handle it.... however I've started neuropathy training sessions... and I hope to go off the Prozac within a year... but im not unrealistic... ui just want to know that im being the best role model I can for my kids ( said the violinist who sings politicaklly incorrect songs and has the most foul stage mouth one ever heard)- excuse the typing please... its the tramadol.

I think my kids learn from me that therea a time and place for anything and everything and as long as you are doing it within the guidelines and boundries that people are ok with and is ok for you... that you don't have to deprive yourself of any form of social silliness ( except drugs.... I really hate drugs.... )

short story ( yeah I know... ic ant wrote a SHORT story)

in college... ONCE I was at a party and someone offered me cocaine... I remember thinking... ok I wonder whats gonna haoppen... and then I tried it and I liked it and I thought to myself... " get XXXXXXX this is great... if you could just... OMG HOLD IT RIGHT THERE ARE YOU HEARING YOURSELF... NEVER DI
O THIS AGAIN" it was the " if I I could just... " and the what... was too much... i8f I could just do it every day if I could just.... i9 heard my brain and I stopped it in its tracks....

ill admit ive smoked marijuana casually from time to time as an adult... but I mean,... for a musician... that's kind of mandatory

Brief Answer:
You need to seek definitive treatment for the Hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hey there XXXXXXX I'm glad you got back to me. Good talk. I think I understand your situation.

I wish I could help you more, but the treatment of a hernia is very specific. It needs surgical repair (depending on the hernia, there are different surgeries). Have you expended all your options on getting this thing taken care off?

Medicaid, community clinics, university clinics? I'm not saying you haven't i'm just trying to find out. There also the option of medical tourism. You can get surgery on the cheap in XXXXXXX and other South Asian Countries. I'm not a shill. I've treated such patients here and I'm proud to say we give world class treatment out here.

As for your family and the issues with drugs. You seem to be on the right path. As long as you are open and caring with your kids, i'm sure they will come to you with their trials and tribulations and I'm sure they will have to face the specter of drug addiction in school and college. An open and honest relationship with them is the best idea I have.

As far as your own sporadic use of marijuana. I'd certainly suggest you avoid it. Smoking a spliff or a joint carries some of the same risks as smoking cigarettes. More important, the muscle relaxant properties of THC can actually worsen your hernia.

Try and explore your options for permanent treatment. I know its not easy and I'm sure its aggravating hearing someone say the same thing over and over. But from a medical standpoint.. it's the best possible outcome.

I'm here if you need me,
V
