default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Hi- I'm a 66 yo male, non-smoker (one year). For the past couple of weeks I have had a blood clot in my urine every time I void my bladder. No pain. Upper right abdomen a little swelling and tenderness- around my liver I think. TURP 5 years ago. Strong family history of prostate cancer. Have great insurance but no regular physician. First voiding in the morning is about 1/4 in. in diameter, rest of the day BB size. Any possible suggestions as to what is causing this?

Brief Answer:
You should consult urologist right away.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Blood in urine can be caused by several issues including urinary tract infection, prostate inflammation, prostate enlargement, bladder cancer, prostate cancer.

As you have prostate cancer in family, it makes you prone to this cancer for sure.
Smoking history increases the risk of kidney and bladder cancer.

That is why, I suggest you to do not wait with it any longer. You should have PSA level checked, urine analysis, abdominal ultrasound. Once you get this results, you should consult urologist. Cystoscopy and transrectal ultrasound (depending of the PSA level) should be done.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I had my PSA checked 1 year ago and it was .11 which is where it always has been. As I don't have a physician and my duration here is limited ( I'm leaving the state on Friday) should I go to a clinic or right to the Emergency Room?

Brief Answer:
ER visit is not necessary.

Detailed Answer:
ER visit is not necessary. You can wait few days, a week. I wont change anything.
PSA level should be compared with previous one to see if it has gotten higher or not.
