Posted on Fri, 9 Dec 2016
Question: Hi, my name is XXXXXXX I have been getting allergic cough for a few months now. I visited a doctor, who advised me Symbicort (inhalation), ABPhylline and Montelukast and asked me to get blood tests done at the end of the week.

My IgE is now 166.7, ESR is 40, Eosinophil% is 2.3.

What do these indicate and what are the things I should be careful about?

Brief Answer:
These are indicators of allergy.

Detailed Answer:

Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

You have mentioned that you have allergic cough for which you are taking treatment.

IgE levels and eosinophils indicate allergy. As of now both the levels are within normal limits which may indicate that your allergy is under control. ESR is a very non specific parameter and may be raised in many conditions. It is slightly on the higher side in your case.

You have been prescribed adequate medicines for your cough. Continue them.

You should avoid dust, smoke and anything that you know you are allergic to. Avoid extreme cold temperatures, cold water, cold drinks, fruit juices and junk food. Do some physical exercises and some deep breathing exercises.

This should help you.

Take care.

I saw the doctor for follow up today. I have been asked to do PFT with reversibility. What should I expect here?

Also, what would H/S/O AR/BHR mean on his notes? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
It may be normal, mild to severe obstruction or restrictions

Detailed Answer:
You can expect anything on PFT starting from normal to mild to severe obstruction or restriction or mixed defect depending on so many factors. Wait for the test result and then you can ask your treating physician to explain it .

I can't say about the abbreviations used by the doctor as these are not standard abbreviations. H/S/O may mean history suggestive of.I can make only a guess of AR which could be airway reactivity and BHR could mean bronchial hyper reactivity. All these terms are used in case of patients having allergy and asthma. You may coƱfirm from your doctor.
