Question: My vitamin d levels are low, calcium levels are 10 and my TSH is 3.94 . My doctor prescribed me vitamin d 50,000 iu . I'm curious to know with a calcium level at 10 and elevated thyroid level is it safe to take the vitamin d ? I'm thinking it's no because of my calcium and thyroid .

Good day,
Noted your concern.
First of all, your TSH levels are not high, it is normal. Your calcium levels are normal, but when Vitamin D is low, body produce excess PTH hormone ( secondary hyperparathyroidism) to balance calcium. So most of the calcium in blood is extracted out of the bone by PTH to maintain normal calcium levels. In the long run it weakens your bones. So it is important to take Vitamin D 50000 units weekly once for 8-10 weeks and then monthly once. You must also take sufficent calcium ( 1000 to 1200 mg) per day either in diet or as tablets irrespective of your normal serum calcium status.It is important to take calcium along with vitamin D.
