Posted on Wed, 14 Jan 2015
Question: i had an abdominal ultra sound which showed a tiny nonshadowing echogenic focus seeen in the left kidney which could represent an angiomyolipoma. it measured only about 3 to 4mmacross. i did have fibriods at the time i had the ultra sound. Should i be concerned about this finding? Ultra sound was in 2011 & i had a myomectomy in2012. some times i have pain in my left lower back

Brief Answer:
Small angiomyolipoma can be left alone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thanks for the query.
Angiomyolipoma is the commonest benign tumor of the kidney and is composed of blood vessels, smooth muscle cells and fat cells. They are usually harmless but rarely may grow and impair kidney functions is or the blood vessels may dilate and burst leading to bleeding in the kidney and abdomen.
Since you had the ultrasound examination 3 years ago and you have some pain in the kidney region about which you are concerned, it may be a good idea to repeat the ultrasound examination to see the size of the lesion. If it is small, it can be left alone. Large ones may be treated to prevent bleeding.
