default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: I have had a pain on the left side of my nose for the last few days. It hurts most of the time on and off but it always hurts when I touch that area. When the pain is very bad the left side of my nose feels warm and when I touch it, I feel a pulse and it hurts even worse. The pain can even reach my cheek area right beside my nose. Does anyone know what this could be and also what type of doctor I can make an appointment with?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare Magic!
I am Dr Ram, I will try to answer your query.
The pain on one side of nose that is throbbing nature and aggravates with touch is highly suggestive of a furuncle in the nose.
It is a type of local infection in the sebaceous glands of nose but it can spread to vital areas like eyes and brain hence it should be attended by a local ENT doctor or a physician as soon as possible.
He will confirm the diagnosis and will prescribe swelling and pain control medicine and broad spectrum antibiotics. Local application of antibiotic Cream Mupirocin is highly advised in addition.
You should also get yourself checked for diabetes or impaired glucose metabolism.
I hope the advise would be informative and useful for you.
Take Care!

Thanks for the helpful advice. I was wondering based on the symptoms I gave you how likely would it be that I had diabetes. Also is this easily treatable and could something like this be fatal if not treated?

Brief Answer:
Treatable- The earlier the better.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome back.
Possibility of diabetes is an indirect one.
Diabetic patients have such infections more commonly so it is important to rule it out.
It should be treated as soon as possible.
The furuncles are fully curable but if left like that may take serious turn.
Better get treatment early.
Take care.
