What Does The Following X-ray Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: Hi, I am a 70-1/2 year old woman. Because I am feeling pain in my thoracic spine I ask for a EX-RAY.
THE RESULTS SAY THIS: DEXTROTHORACIC AND LEVOLUMBER SCOLIOSIS is present. I have done some reading and it sounds like I have MILD SCOLIOSIS. What do you think? My pain doctor says he was unable to any scoliosis. I might add that in 2008 appx. I had cervical fusion, 5,6 I believe.
Do I have a problem? I ask because of my age.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts and consideration

P.S. I am not pitting doctor vs doctor. I am just asking for a second opinion. Also, everyday I have the nausea feeling. I do not throw up, just the feeling. I just had that feeling taking clothes out of the dryer.

Brief Answer:
I agree with your interpretation of scoliosis

Detailed Answer:
Although the x-ray is not ENTIRELY specific regarding the DEXTRO- and LEVO- descriptions it is true that the terminology is consistent with there being a scoliotic spine. I don't see any reference in what you wrote to "mild" severity. In fact, I see no reference in what you wrote to ANY grade of severity so I believe your interpretation is that it is "mild"...though the amount of analgesic fire power you have to fight this pain is impressive...so just based upon that fact alone my belief is that the degree of your pain is greater than just "mild", Yes?

However, the exact meaning of DEXTROthoracic would be a curving of the thoracic spine which is RIGHTWARD from the perspective of an examiner standing BEHIND a patient and noting additional curving to the patient's and examiner's right whereas LEVOlumbar is a curving of the LUMBAR spine (scoliosis) to the LEFT. Again, from the perspective of an examiner standing behind a patient and viewing this curvature in the lower spine as to the LEFT relative to both patient and examiner.

If you feel that your back pain symptoms are worse clinically now than they were in 2008 then, perhaps a repeat scan would illustrate a progression. Also, a good radiologist will give a NUMBER OF DEGREES (5, 10, 15, etc.) that the scoliosis carries. This in fact, is what determines the gradations of mild, moderate, and severe.

I'm afraid the nausea doesn't particular strike me as being as a consequence of the scoliotic abnormalities in your thoracic and lumbar spines. I see that you are on quite a bit of opiate medication. This in and of itself is a sufficient risk factor to hypothesize a relationship with GI upset and nausea. My recommendation is that you speak with your pain doctor to explore ways of coming off of the large amount of opiate drugs and to look for alternative means of treating or managing the scoliosis.
