Question: My wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor, astrocytoma grade 3. She made radiotherapy concurrent with quimotherapy and quimotherapy with temozolomide for 6 months. She made MRI this week in order to have the final results. The conclusion was that the tumor has reduced significantly but stills there. The oncologist said that there's nothing else to do unless wait for the worse. She prescribed betanoide. Is it true? Nothing more could be done? Waiting for your help.

Brief Answer:
Astrocytoma grade III prognosis and treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Your wife is having anaplastic astrocytoma or grade III glioma. It is one of the bad tumor.

It has a tendency to recur even after complete resection and radio-chemotherapy. Later on, with time, it changes to grade IV or glioblastoma multiform. It is the worst tumor.

The prognosis in it is usually varies between 18 to 30 months. The prognosis can be improved and life span can be increased by

: Total surgical resection
: If tumor is detected early
: With chemotherapy and radiotherapy both
: Tumor in non significant area of brain
: No focal deficit
: Regular follow up

You can ask your doctor about any new drug trail in which your wife can be enrolled. Because there is no good prognosis of Astrocytoma grade III. Science is trying to discover new medication and new surgical methods to complete remove it.

Your doctor had given you correct advise. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
