What Does The CT Of The Abdomen Indicate?

default
Posted on Sun, 19 Apr 2015
Question: On April 2014 I had a CT of the abdomen and pelvis because I had a kidney stone, and one of the findings reads as follows:

" Heterogeneity of the liver appears to be related to fatty infiltration of the liver"

I was very concern and I ask my primary doctor for a liver sonogram, which I had on May 2014, the findings
reads as follows:
"The liver measures 15.5 cm. It is mildly heterogeneous and echogenic. Focal lesion is not seen. Common duct is normal at 5 mm. There is no fluid

Impression: Abnormality of the liver appears to be related to fatty infiltration.

My doctor is not concern, but I am, and I would like to know if
I have a mildly case of fatty liver, like she said.

Thank you.

Dr rakesh: thank for your reply.
1-my height is 5'6", weight in 2014 at the time of the sonogram 234 lbs.
2- I am not very active but I tried to go to the gym at least 2 times a week.
3- I never eat fatty food or drink alcohol.
4- according to my doctor my cholesterol is normal.
After I found that I have fatty liver I put myself in a diet and lost 16 pounds.
But I reach a plateau and seems to me that I will be stock at that weight (217 lbs)
My doctor said that the reason of my fatty liver is because I am overweight.
I am very frustrated.

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back, I am sorry for the short delay in my reply. There was a family emergency.
The following are my suggestions.

1. Your body mass index is 37.8 which means that you are obese. Just like how you have fat under the skin, fat has also accumulated around the liver leading to fatty liver.
2. It is a benign condition, there is nothing to be frustrated about at the moment. HOwever on the long run it can lead to liver failure.
3. Cholesterol being normal is a good sign.

Here is how you should go about it

1. I am happy that you dont eat fatty food but the reason you are overweight is not because of the food but because of your sedentary lifestyle
2. I recommend that you get yourself a good fitness tracker and make sure that you walk atleast 10,000 steps a day. If you are not into technology then please make sure you brisk walk for atleast 45 min
3. Your aim should be to lose 5-8 pounds ever month, please remember losing weight is a constant process and not a one or a two day thing. Motivation should be there every single day to keep going
4. Studies have shown that bending abdominal exercises reduces fatty liver significantly
5. I prescribe my obese patients with fatty liver Tab metformin 250 twice a day. PLease approach your physician with my opinion for a prescription

Please dont be frustrated, what you have is reverisble.

I hope I was of help,I am sure you will have a lot of doubt, I will be happy to sort them out for you

Regards
