Question: My sister liver is not good. Her oxigen level is 83. She has gain almost 20 pounds in 5 days. She looks grey. She can hardly keep her eyes open. She drinks alot but I dont see her going to the bathroom. She is stage 4 cerosis of the liver. Is she in the process of dying?? Her stomach is huge and has been getting cramps in the inner legs. she insists on being by herself. She is suppose to use her oxigen 24-7. What should I do. She is suppose to see the doctor tomorrow.

Brief Answer:
Please take her to the ER now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello -

Given that she has gained 20 pounds in a matter of days and has Stage 4 Cirrhosis, the weight gain is most likely from ascites, a collection of fluid in the abdomen.

The difficulty keeping her eyes open, given this scenario, is likely that ammonia has built up in her blood.

I recommend that she go in to the ER tonight to have a serum ammonia level done, and most likely to have the ascites drained. Her respiratory status should be addressed then too. I wouldn't wait until tomorrow. Your sister is very sick.

I hope this information helps.
