Brief Answer:
You need further tests for confirmation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX

Reactive (positive)result is only preliminary result and it must be followed up with confirmatory tests. It is a rapid ELISA test for HIV detection.
Reactive means that HIV antibodies has been found in your sample.

You need additional test known as Western Blot.Combination of ELISA and western blot test is highly sensitive for detection of HIV infection.

COI is a technical term for estimation of antibodies.

Hello Doctor

If COI > 1, it is positive, correct? So, when COI = 56.7, the chances of being positive have increased right? What are the chances that COI = 56.7 and it comes negative in Western Blot? Waiting for your reply. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX

Value COI is not very important and it doesn't increase the chances of confirmation in western blot. This test may give false positive results.
Western blot is needed because there may be chances of false positive results in initial screening methods.

Initial screening methods estimate antibody level whereas western Blot test detects specific protein bands that are present in an HIV infected individual. Combination of positive Elisa and positive Western Blot is 99.9 percent accurate in detecting HIV infection.

I never had sex with any other woman other than my wife that also I stopped 7 years ago. I had platelet transfusion about two years two months ago when I had dengue fever and my platelet count went down. I had peripheral angioplasty done on my leg two years ago. I get shaved at a barber shop and I had two cuts less than two years. When I was admitted for Dengue fever, HIV test was done which came negative two years ago. If the western blot comes positive, then could any of these be the reasons why I contracted HIV?

Hello XXXX

It is early to conclude that you are suffering from HIV.Let the investigations complete for its confirmation.

Sex is not the only way to spread HIV.It may be due to platelet transfusion/angioplasty that is related in your case.
