Posted on Thu, 10 Mar 2016
Question: My ultra sound scan report says that liver is normal in size with increased parenchymal echotexture. No solid or cystic lesions. No intra hepatic biliary dilation. What does it mean. Any serious concern. Any further investigations are required. I am non diabetic. My age is 47 years. I am non alcoholic. My height is 5 feet 8 inches and weight is 85 kgs. I am suffering from severe migraine head ache for the last 23 years. Tried lot of medicines as per the advise of best doctors but not got relief except with the sumatriptan and naproxen tablets. For the last 4 years I am using this tablet daily. I am consuming only 1/4th part of the tablet and it is giving very good relief.. 1/4th part means 1/4th of sumitriptan 85 mg and 1/4th of naproxen sodium 500mg. Without this medicine it is very difficult to bear the head ache. By continuing this medicine how to go forward in my rest of life without liver problems further and how to get rid of from fatty liver problem. Kindly suggest. Ns XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver has to be compared with liver function test

Detailed Answer:
Hi Nsraju68,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. There is a normal liver with increased fat content. There are many causes of liver showing fatty changes
(i) Increased intake of fatty foods and alcohol
(ii) Over weight and obese patients.
(iii) Those who have fatty liver running in family members.
(iv) Any liver condition that is changing appearance of liver.
(v) Mild fatty liver can also be there in many normal people
(vi) People taking any medicine which can affect the liver function

2. You can get your liver function test and lipid profile done to know if the liver enzymes are raised and cholesterol numbers are increased. If liver function test is normal then the cause of your fatty liver might be due to obesity or lifestyle and is insignificant.

3. If you have abnormal liver function then what your nephrologist said might be right. Probably you need to discuss your migraine medicine with your doctor.

4. In the medicines given to you today,
(i) bestor is rosuvastatin which helps to reduce cholesterol,
(ii) renomega is for health benefit
(iii) fexostat is febuxostat and helps to decrease uric acid level

5. In conclusion, for your fatty liver, it is suggested that you please get liver function test done and if the result is normal then there is no problem and you need to follow healthy lifestyle. If the liver function test is abnormal then please discuss your treatment for migraine with your doctor and this might require change in medicine and follow up liver function regularly.

Hope your query is answered.
