What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate After Treating Mononucleosis?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: I had Mono back in January/Febuary and my blood work has been screwed up ever since. My igM levels are low and my lymphocyte count stays low since I got sick. I am so worried about this... why wont my igM levels come back up?Should I be concerned? I went to oncologist and she ruled out leukemia and did a full body scan to check for lymphoma. I do have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, POTS Syndrome, and had Lyme Disease when I was 5. I am now 31 years old. Should I be worried about a life-threatening illness?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry for this.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
No need to worry for low IgM because you are not having any symptoms and you already consulted oncologist.
So no need to worry cancer.
Infectious mononucleosis is not having severe complications. In 95% of cases no complications are seen.
So also don't worry about mononucleosis.
Are you taking any drugs for mixed connective tissue disease or hashimoto 's thyroiditis? Your low IgM can be due to drugs.
So discuss about drug induced low IgM with immunologist.
At present no need to worry for any life threatening condition.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.

I do take Metoprolol extended release, fludrocortisone, and hydroxycholorquine (plaquenil). You mention i was asymptomatic. I do have a few weird symptoms but i'm not sure what type of symptoms you were looking for in regards to my abnormal bloodwork. For instance... I do have extreme fatigue but I live with that thanks to my POTS and MCTD. I would never know if my fatigue was something more major. I also deal with dry itchy skin.. but I had equated that to my thyroid and neurological issues. Then it does appear I have developed a skin allergy the past few months. I cant be in the sun for long periods or I get tiny red bumps that itch, dry up, scab, then disappear. It looks like eczema when it drys up. Then lastly... the reason i got sent to oncologist was because of a lump on my clavicle... oncologist felt it was just part of my mctd and inflammation since all the cancer tests were clear and it didnt even show up on full body scan for lymphoma. it did go away within 2 months and hasnt returned. last month i developed enlarged lymph node behind ear on my neck. I went back to oncologist and she noticed i had a large pimple close to it. she felt it was enlarged due to acne... she did go ahead and put me on doxycycline. the lymph node did return to normal size 4 weeks after antibiotics. Sorry if i sound like hypochondraic... i am not. i think when my doctor first mentioned 'cancer' or 'serious immune deficiency' it got me shook up and freaked out.. Thank you for your patients.
