What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

Posted on Fri, 4 Dec 2015
Question: (sent in question already)
My doctor performed a "pre-op" medical exam as requested by eye specialist who will perform cataract surgery on me in December and January. He said my blood pressure was high and asked me to come back to check that again. Should I ask him other questions? I noticed the exam was short and he didn't ask for a urine sample or blood test.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that an isolated high blood pressure value (as the one measured at the doctors office) does not indicate for sure that you suffer from high blood pressure.

You should know that in some individuals the blood pressure raises when consulting with the doctor (such as in White Coat Syndrome).

So it is necessary to closely monitor your blood pressure several times during the day (in sitting position after 10minutes of total relax) for a week and refer those values to your doctor.

I would also recommend performing a careful physical examination and some tests:
-resting ECG
-chest X ray study
-blood lab tests (complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, kidney and liver function tests, PCR, sedimentation rate, blood electrolytes, fasting glucose, cortisol and aldosteron plasma levels), to investigate for possible secondary causes of high blood pressure.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes!
